About Bergdahl Furniture

HERBERT BERGDAHL
Founder, lead designer, builder

Herb Bergdahl has been a cabinetmaker and woodworker for more than 45 years. He is a respected master craftsman in his field.

A self-taught visual artist, Herb honed his technical expertise through years of apprenticeship. From interior finish work and antique furniture restoration to carpentry and floor refinishing. The scope of his projects has varied, from refinishing single pieces of historic furniture, to the design and construction of modern custom-built cabinetry for entire homes.

The majority of Herb’s clientele has been private individuals. However, he also spent two years building furniture for designer Robert Bristow (work that was shown by Ralph Pucci International, one of the world’s leading furniture galleries).

Herb’s work is influenced by many styles and periods of furniture and aesthetic movements: Greene and Greene, George Nakashima, Mission, and Art Deco. His appreciation for design that is both simple and beautiful inspires him to create work from hardwood and native burl. Each piece of raw material is selected for its quality, color, and pattern of grain. His furniture features a variety of hand cut joinery techniques, and all of his pieces have hand applied finishes. Herb’s work is noted for the unique essence from which it is fashioned, balancing form and function.

Herb’s woodcraft is in private collections around the country. His furniture, bowls, and decorative objects are produced in a limited number, sold primarily through private commissions.

Herb is a native of rural northwest Connecticut. His workshop is located in the home that he designed and built himself, on land that has been in his family for three generations.
